I have been an amateur photographer on and off for over 50 years! But after realizing that birding and photography were my two most cherished post-retirement passions, I decided that I needed to become both a better photographer and a better bird photographer. Rich’s obvious talent for and approach to bird photography immediately attracted me to his mentorship program. I started the program with a little trepidation, thinking that I was perhaps not good enough to benefit from it. The time spent with Rich dispelled any concerns that I may have had. His unique and insightful approach to mentorship took me back to the roots of my photography. Asking deep questions, Rich explored with me why I take photographs and where I expect photography to take me. Rich’s deep understanding of technique, composition and analysis of what makes great images then pointed me towards approaches to photography that I had not considered before. And it also demonstrated that I could take great images if I applied myself with purpose and passion. Finally, Rich got me to really think about creativity … and drawing out my own latent creativity … this is still work in progress, but the seeds have been sown. I feel completely differently about my photography today after the mentorship program. I am more confident with my camera in hand that I can capture good, even great images. I am excited about the next phase of my photography journey and how I can use my images to communicate how I feel about the world around me. Perhaps the most important aspect of the mentorship program, however, has been getting to know Rich and how he integrates his faith and purpose into his work, his photography and his coaching. I gained so much more from these insights than I expected, for which I am forever grateful.

I think what makes the course so special to me is the 1-on-1 attention from you and the specialized feedback I get on my images. The chance to ask questions on the spot and the aha moments when we go deeper into the topics as a result. And then there is the continuous format of 9 sessions that keeps building on the momentum. In 2023, the stars aligned and I was presented with a chance to sign up for his online mentorship programme. The amount of material covered was a little overwhelming at first, but the programme is structured in such a way that as you put the techniques into practice, everything starts to fall into place. Earlier this year I had the privilege of being tutored by one of the world’s finest bird photographers, Richard Flack. His detailed online mentorship programme was fantastic. When I first contacted Richard, I presented him with an interesting challenge. I am a macro photographer of invertebrates and herpetofauna and with Richard I was going to be embarking on a predominantly bird-orientated course. He was so passionate, accepting the challenge, which allowed for a very enjoyable experience throughout. As I reside in the UK and Richard in South Africa, our lessons were covered through online Zoom calls. His in-depth knowledge and the thorough course content within each lesson will be a great asset to the future of my photography. I particularly enjoyed sharing my images with him in the latter stages of the course, using the information that I had learnt in previous lessons to better my images. Overall, I had an excellent experience, learnt a great deal, and made a lifelong friend. Richard is a great person with a wonderful soul. I have done many tutorials, courses and workshops about photography and editing and most focus on the technical side; using the correct settings on the camera and proper techniques to enhance a picture in PS or LR. I attended the "Flack Photography workshop 30th June to 3rd July" which was held at the Bosch Hoek Golfing Estate.
The workshop was extremely informative and the knowledge shared by Richard was without limitation. I have a tendency to always zoom in too far and the creative aspect of the workshop has given me a completely new perspective in telling the story and including the environment and habitat of the subject. I am a lover of bird photography and Richard has opened a completely new perspective to me as a photographer.
Richard allowed generous classroom and practical time - I never felt under pressure, in either the classroom or the field.
Richard took time to spend with the workshop attendees and ensured individual attention - sharing his methodology and approach when preparing for a photograph. The thought processes and planning that I have never before considered.
The venue selected for the Workshop could not have been better - hospitality was excellent, location to the accommodation and the general environment for photographic opportunity. The lodge itself was very comfortable and relaxing - I would definitely like to return.
