“The Magical Karkloof” ~ A Buff-streaked Chat calls from his lookout point over the magnificent Mbona Nature Reserve in the Karkloof, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
I have spent many weeks in these mountains hoping to capture an image that portrays a little of what I feel when looking over this incredible landscape. As many of you will know, I have a deep love for Africa and birds and since February 2022 have been working on a new project called “Iconic African Birdscapes”. These images hope to not only show off Africa’s incredible birdlife but also the exquisite biomes that we need to conserve to ensure their survival. They are different to my usual “habitat shots” as they give equal weighting to the beauty of the landscape and that of the bird. This is my first image in this series called “The Magical Karkloof” and shows an iconic Karkloof landscape at Mbona Nature Reserve with an equally iconic bird; a Buff-streaked Chat. After identifying this magnificent viewpoint, it took months of observation and perseverance to finally get the bird and the landscape to work together.
This limited edition image is part of a series called “Iconic African Birdscapes”; focused on showing iconic African landscapes and the birds that call them home.
