“Epic Underberg” ~ A solitary Grey-crowned Crane flies over an iconic scene of mielie fields, grazing cattle and snow covered mountains in the southern Drakensberg of South Africa.
While visiting a master’s student; who was studying endangered Grey-crowned Cranes in the southern Drakensberg, to learn about her work and these exquisite birds, I came across a truly iconic, early morning scene near Himeville. A fresh carpet of snow covered the distant mountains, cattle were grazing in the nearby fields and small groups of Grey-crowned cranes were making their way to feeding stations on nearby dairy farms. There were many moments captured, but this photograph stands out as the most revealing of how it felt to be there and take in this magnificent scene.
This limited edition image is part of a series called “Iconic African Birdscapes”; focused on showing iconic African landscapes and the birds that call them home.
